"Anna Karenina – freely narrated" with live music

"Freedom? What for Freedom?"

On this evening, the St. Petri Cultural Church will become a stage for world literature: Actress Meike Rötzer brings Leo Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina" to life in 90 minutes and narrates the novel freely. In an era of societal upheaval, Anna Karenina escapes her tormenting marriage to the mocking Alexei Karenin to be with the passionately loved Count Vronsky, from whom she soon expects a child. Only after a severe illness does a shared life open up for them, albeit one that is not socially recognized, but soon becomes marked by jealousy and loneliness, ultimately forcing them to end their lives. This classic of world literature raises questions about love and freedom that still resonate with us today. With live music by Charlotte Balle.

Meike Rötzer is an actress, publisher, and audiobook narrator. From 2008 to 2022, she was an editor at Matthes & Seitz publishing house. In 2022, she founded the storytelling book publishing house, and in 2023, she was nominated for the German Audiobook Award as Best Performer.

Charlotte Balle was part of the State Orchestra Stuttgart, the Hamburg State Opera, and the Stuttgart Philharmonic. She is the first violinist of the string quartet Ladystrings and has performed on stages around the world with Jon Lord, Michael Jackson, and Robbie Williams, among others.
