In her first institutional solo exhibition in Germany, Cypriot artist Maria Toumazou employs photographic imaging techniques to reinterpret and further develop existing works. The exhibition title refers to the half-frame camera model, which became popular in the early 1960s and revolutionized photography. By halving the image size on a standard 35mm film, the number of exposures doubled while costs remained the same. This doubling alludes both to an intensification of the photographic experience and to a foreshadowing of the continuous technological progress in image capture, shaping our present as a multilayered, decentralized, and hyper-referential phenomenon.

Half Frame spans both the cultural church St. Petri and the spaces of the Overbeck Society. At St. Petri, Toumazou appropriates existing objects in her sculptures and reinterprets them. Just as myths travel through cultures, brand-name products circulate in the global economy— a profound antagonism that defines the history and present of Cyprus.

Toumazou’s works examine the hidden histories of found objects and pre-existing artistic concepts. With Half Frame, she offers us a new perspective from which the relics of technological and cultural optimism can be viewed in a sequence of half-images.
