Explaining the World in Twenty Minutes?
Solo Verbo for the Last Time at St. Petri
Twelve years ago, Pastor Dr. Bernd Schwarze launched his series on the philosophy of religion, "Solo Verbo – by the Word alone," at St. Petri Church in Lübeck. The idea was to critically examine aspects of the Christian creed—embedded in vocal music and readings—for their relevance in the present day. God and faith, the significance of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, and the Church were each scrutinized for their meaning and impact.
“I tried to explain the world in twenty minutes every time,” says Pastor Dr. Bernd Schwarze with a smile. His wide-ranging reflections led him into the realms of psychology, sociology, and astrophysics. “I always managed to charm my way past the limits of my wisdom with a sense of humor and an eye for entertainment,” Schwarze notes. The singing of the ensemble Viva Voce, he adds, consistently grounded his intellectual flights of fancy.
The Solo Verbo series concludes with its 36th installment on Wednesday, June 18, at 7 p.m. Under the title "Of Amen and Omen," the theologian plans to sum up his philosophical reflections and offer thoughts on the future of faith and the Church. What should happen? What threatens? And what may we hope for?
The vocal ensemble Viva Voce will perform works by Marcus Roberts, Halfdan Kjerulf, and Thomas Tallis. As always, the service will close with a literary benediction and a blessing song by John Rutter. “I can’t rule out a little surprise at the end,” says Pastor Schwarze. So there’s reason to stay curious.
